Update 1.2 - Wonder Update, Released!


Update 1.2 - "Wonder Update" now live!

A month and a half after the game was initially released in participation of Godot Wild Jam 79, a front page feature, 104 ratings, and over 33K plays, I'm proud to present the next iteration of Before the Ash!

This update focuses on adding the mechanics, polish and features that were planned and did not make it to 1.0.

Most notably, it adds a new type of building called Wonder, which grants a ton of a score. See the change list below!

Huge thanks to Paul for the additional sounds and improvements to the music, and to all the playtesters and everyone who helped with the game! (listed in the credits window).

⚙️ Gameplay Changes

  • You can now delay the final eruption by paying faith, up to 3 times
  • Added a new type of buildings: Wonder
  • New currency: gold - now used to purchase cards from the shop instead of faith
  • Expanded the shop
  • Restoring charred lands now grants points
  • Fortuna's shop now opens at dawn instead of at night
  • Fortuna's shop can now be opened at will (only once) and rerolled for faith
  • You will now always start with a pasture, a camp and a quarry, and you will never start with rare cards
  • Added 3 new maps and made changes to some of the previous maps
  • You can now sacrifice resources for faith
  • Game now saves your settings
  • Resources are no longer generated during the final eruption

🏛 New Buildings

  • Market - generates gold
  • Arch - rare, generates faith
  • Road - generates gold
  • Orchard - generates food
  • Temple - wonder, grants faith, shop-exclusive, can only be built once
  • Removed fishing hut as it doesn't fit the theme

⚖ Balance

  • Changed score calculation: placing buildings (including rare buildings and wonders), and extinguishing fires grant more points
  • Meadow and forest cards cost less to buy and build
  • Balance changes to all costs and resource generation amounts
  • Removed meadow and forest cards from the deck

🌋 Volcano

  • Clicking the volcano bar when not in build mode will open the Volcano Delay window
  • The volcano now fills up to indicate when it is about to erupt
  • Improved fire visibility, and fire now lights up
  • Moved Volcano bar to the top-center and made it shorter
  • Added light to the volcano at night
  • Volcano now shakes before erupting
  • Volcano now erupts more often at the beginning and less often at the end, but eruptions are deadlier towards the end
  • Added separators to the volcano bar that indicate its phases
  • Buildings, meadows, and forests now burn faster
  • Added prompt to extinguish fires
  • Fires will now instantly vanish when extinguished 
  • Added shadows beneath the lava balls

🎨 Visuals

  • Made night brighter
  • Added stars to the night's background
  • Added more shake screen effects
  • Clouds now become invisible when hovered over
  • You can now disable the clouds

📱User Interface

  • Added notification system - so you know what burned out, and when free cards are available
  • Made the resources UI a column instead of a row
  • Added tutorial messages, with an option to disable them
  • On hover, the resources UI will display resource names and generation per second
  • When hovering over a card, the required resources and costs are now highlighted
  • Buildings and cards now show the same generation to seconds ratio
  • Added "does not generate" text to buildings that don’t generate resources
  • Removed Godot Wild Jam logo from the menu
  • Hide exit button on web build
  • Score now shows calculation
  • Added warning before first closing Fortuna
  • Added a custom loading screen
  • Added tooltip hints to some buttons
  • Added credits window
  • Added an option to disable the custom cursor in the menu
  • Added a loading screen to prevent the game from stuttering when loading shaders for the first time
  • The screen can now be freely resized

🎵 Audio

  • The soundtrack will no longer loop back to the quiet part
  • Added a bell sound effect when a card becomes available to build
  • Added a rumble sound effect to the volcano
  • Added UI sound effects
  • Added reverb to day-night cycle
  • tweaked and finetuned audio

🐛 Bug Fixes

  • Fixed memory leak causing crashes on web and low FPS on desktop
  • Fixed an issue with music causing the game to stutter on HTML5
  • Fixed an issue with the HTML5 version not loading on some devices
  • Fixed card animation stuttering
  • Fixed build tile color flickering when hovering cards
  • Fixed checkbox not displaying the correct text
  • Fixed a bug that caused 1px black bars at the sides of the screen
  • Fixed a bug with tooltip not updating its position correctly
  • Fixed an issue with the fire's extinguish and spread SFX overlapping and cancelling each other
  • Fixed a bug that enabled you to place a building on a charred tile even if it cannot be placed
  • Removed .exe from Linux. OOPS! 🤣
